项目摘要

We are investigators from the Research Group on Infectious Diseases of Swine and from the Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network of the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire of Université de Montréal. We study how some microbes, bacteria, cause diseases in animals and humans. We study bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Streptococcus suis, Clostridium perfringens and Staphylococcus aureus. We are discovering the weapons that these microbes use to cause diseases and learning how they work. This research leads to new diagnostic tools and new strategies to control infection (such as drugs or vaccines). We are using and maintaining a huge collection of bacterial pathogens of animal origin. Freeze-drying allows for long-term and safe storage of these bacterial pathogens. This new freeze dryer we are requesting is to replace the current one bought in 1987. Our current freeze dryer has reached its end-life cycle and there are no more spare parts available to fix it. Furthermore, there is no other instrument like this on our campus. A delay in replacing the equipment would suspend all bacterial strains and mutants safeguarding for all research projects within the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire. There will be a high risk of loosing valuable and unique biological materials. There is therefore an urgent need to replace it. This equipment will be used by a large number of researchers and their trainees.
