Many industrial applications require the automated positioning of a small object in three dimensional space. For instance, on an assembly line, consumer devices are often assembled in part by robots. As the device moves past the robot on the assembly line, small adjustments of the position of the device need to be made to present a particular aspect of the device to the robot, rather than moving the robot. For this and many other purposes, planar motion stages are often used. A planar motion stage consists of a flat stage that can move in two (horizontal, X-Y) dimensions and adjust slightly its height (Z) or angle (pitch, roll, yaw). Typically, very smooth and precise movement is desired. This project is to evaluate an ideal motion stage, which would have a long stroke in X and Y (the ability to move the stage "far" horizontally), millimeter to cm stroke in Z, the ability to rotate around all three axes, no friction, high speed and low cost and complexity.
