The Yudin, Lautens, and Batey groups work in the area of novel metal catalyzed reactions to generate scaffolds of interest to medicinal chemistry, agrochemistry and materials science. We make hundreds of compounds each year and run thousands of reactions. In order to identify and identify the myriad of products, daily access to a GC-MS is required. Students urgently need this equipment and research progress has been slowed since the departure of Professor Vy Dong. We used to have access to her equipment, but that equipment was moved to UC Irvine and is no longer available to more than 40 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in our groups.
