Environmental sciences have come into contact with artificial intelligence/machine learning, and their synergism is creating new breakthroughs. This project aims to develop machine learning methods for the environmental earth sciences, in particular, to (A) develop better crop yield forecast models from satellite data, (B) improve statistical downscaling from coarse resolution global climate models with nonlinear methods, (C) improve the selection of relevant predictors and the optimization of model hyper-parameters by evolutionary strategies and quantum algorithms, and (D) develop automated methods for detecting outliers/errors in the data to improve the reliability of data collected by environmental monitoring systems.
