The sources of clean freshwater in Canada are increasingly under threat from the impact of industrial, mining, agricultural, and human waste activities. Aquatic ecosystems are inherently difficult, labour-intensive and expensive to monitor for water quality using traditional point sampling methods. Thus, there is a need for improved methods to gather data on the dynamics of freshwater contaminants in Canada's lakes and rivers. We proposed Acoustic Sensory Telemetry (AST) which is a new approach that uses fish equipped with intelligent sensors to measure distributions of contaminants in space and time over an enormous geographic range. Telemetry is the remote measurement of chemical and biological variables. In the aquatic environment, telemetry offers rapid feedback on fish biology and behaviour that is necessary to protect biodiversity and
