Biomedical and biosensing devices and systems used for diagnostics and therapy are highly multidisciplinary integrating microelectronics, photonics, microfluidics, microdevices, and nano-/bio- materials. The requested equipment will enable the development, integration, and packaging aspects in various biomedical and biosensing projects including glucose biosensing, DNA analysis, water monitoring, bacteria screening, and muscular integrity monitoring for trauma victims which are being undertaken by the applicants as collaborative research. The requested equipment consists of two ink-jet printers (one for deposition of biocompatible polymer coatings for implantable devices and another for printing of biological receptors and chemical sensing films), a microelectronic probe-station, and a spectrometer to operate in visible and near infrared regions. The advanced ink-jet printing systems will constitute a critically needed platform for educating students of the co-applicants, collaborators and other researchers at McGill and at other universities around the Montreal area on the varied facets of biocompatible packaging of implantable microsensors and 3D spatial deposition of biological receptors and chemical sensing films on various substrates.
