Gestural two-dimensional pointing and target selection using inertial arm motion and muscle activity

A gestural interaction technique will be designed, developed, and evaluated for two-dimensional pointing and target selection using only the sensing capabilities of a new input device developed by Canadian company, Thalmic Labs. The armband-like device combines surface electromyography to detect muscle activity with sensors for inertial arm motion and orientation. Pointing and selection is a fundamental form of input, so achieving this goal will contribute scientific knowledge for researchers and a commercial advantage for Thalmic Labs. Research results will be disseminated in a technical report and peer-reviewed publication, and Thalmic Labs will package the pointing interaction technique with the device making it useful for many common interaction scenarios.
