Dependable services on wireless sensor networks

In recent years, there has been a growing interest worldwide in advancing the state of the art in designing wireless sensor networks and wireless sensor-actuator networks. Research efforts on improving the architecture of such networks and harnessing their power are motivated by their potential in providing a new generation of solutions to problems that arise in vital domains such as industrial processes, transportation, health monitoring, security, and human safety. The deployment of application-specific sensor networks to realize such proposed solutions, however, suffers from drawbacks as application-specific networks offer limited extensibility and reusability, and hence they are inherently not cost-effective. The proposed research contributes to providing better extensible and reusable solution platforms by investigating the design of a new generation of sensor, and sensor-actuator, networks that allows sharing of resources among multiple applications in a dependable way. As such, this new generation of service oriented networks are required to be flexible, configurable, and extensible so as to provide application-independent retaskable networking infrastructure. It is envisioned that the availability of such architectures will facilitate and accelerate the deployment of sensor network solutions developed by potentially different developers and service providers.
