英文摘要
Transit agencies in North American are doing their best to provide a service that can compete with private vehicles. In doing so, many transit agencies are implementing multiple strategies to improve service, and are especially focusing on speed. Yet, in urban areas where congestion is a dominating factor causing delay to buses, transit agencies often suffer from increases in bus running time. One of the major contributors to running time is passenger activity time. This time can only be reduced through implementing innovative approaches to fare collection as well as changing traditional passenger activity. For example, transit agencies can implement smart card systems with the goal of reducing fare collection time, while reducing passenger activity time can be achieved through purchasing low floor buses, bus stop consolidations and by allowing all-door boarding at high demand stops. Yet, implementing all-door boarding requires agencies considering this strategy to carefully select the right routes or stops where such a policy would lead to substantial savings.
