The proposed project aims to investigate the electromagnetic interference problem between power lines and railways and propose effective solutions to mitigate the interference. Railways sharing a common corridor with alternate current (AC) power lines capture a portion of the electromagnetic field energy surrounding the power lines in the air and soil. This captured energy will induce voltage on rail and can result in an electrical shock hazard for people touching the rail. Excessive rail-to-rail voltages can also compromise the normal operation of the signal and protection systems of the railways. In 2010, Canadian National (CN) Railway workers reported electrical shocks upon splicing two sections of rail in the Grande Cache area of Alberta. The rail runs parallel to a distribution power line operated by ATCO Electric for some length. ATCO technicians measured high voltages on the rail value during the winter. A preliminary investigation on the problem was carried out and it was determined that the electromagnetic interference between power line and rail is the cause for the shocks.
