Renewable energy technologies, together with advances in energy efficiency, are being used globally to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to relieve the energy crisis brought on by the depletion of fossil fuels. Representing a growing part of the smart grid model for the electric power industry, renewable and distributed energy resource (DER) units such as photovoltaic (PV) panels or electric vehicles, will be connected to the power distribution systems in increasing numbers. They are used as an enhancement of the traditional electric power grid to provide high-quality, reliable electricity at the utility customer sites. Existing power distributions systems, however, impose several constraints on DER interconnection because of safety, economics, and lack of knowledge and tools to support large-scale integration of DER. Significant research is required to mitigate the gap between the characteristics of DER such as variability, uncertainty and distribution, and the restricted grid operation and regulation standards of utilities. Within this context of DER integration challenges, this research program proposes a grid-edge demand response (DR) energy management system (EMS) solution designed for neighborhood homes, to realize the full potential for extracting the latent capacity and performance available in home energy systems with DER on a real-time basis. The solution aims to bridge home energy management systems (HEMS) with the grid to uphold grid integrity i.e., energy supply-demand balance, plus infrastructure dynamic capacity and optimal health aspects. Elements of the proposed DR system include HEMS agent (HA), grid-edge agent (GA), utility back office and the communication system. The intent with this novel project is to explore the optimization of grid capacity management within localized areas through negotiation between devices that use or produce electricity. The outcomes of the to be lab-proven DR-EMS solution will bring value to many more stakeholders like electricity customers, business developers, transmitters, market operators, and especially the utilities.
