Feature extraction and classification using mobile LiDAR data

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) mobile mapping systems are collecting 3D topographic data to serve engineering and surveying purposes. Processing of the bulky data collected is one of the problems that might face users using such a relatively new technology. Up-to-date, the process of LiDAR mobile system data involves an intensive amount of manual operations for digital feature extraction and results verification. Based on the previous research on airborne LiDAR data by the applicant's team, this Engage Grant will fine-tune the developed radiometric correction, feature extraction and data classification approaches to fit with data collected by LiDAR mobile systems. Tulloch Engineering, an Ontario-based land surveying and geomatics consultancy firm, has recently acquired its first land-based mobile mapping system, including a mobile LiDAR and a video camera sensor.
