Considering the need to curb climate change and the recent development of batteries with high energy densities, the
electric vehicle (EV) market is expected to grow significantly. In collaboration with Canadian industry partners Linamar,
TM4, and Infolytica, McGill University researchers will develop optimal electric drivetrains for electric vehicles offering
high performance at low cost. These integrated systems will consist of a permanent magnet electric motor and its drive
coupled to a controlled multi-speed-ratio transmission for the EV market.
Pure EVs now have a reasonable autonomy, making them more attractive to the typical car buyer. Many governments
around the world are providing significant incentives to develop technologies for the international EV market. As a result,
current global investments in EV technologies range in the tens of billions of dollars. The proposed R&D work in the
technology of EV powertrains will enhance the competitiveness of Linamar, TM4 and Infolytica. Multi-speed drivetrains
will prove more economical as they will be smaller and lighter while providing comparable low-speed torque and
maximum vehicle speed as single-ratio systems. Initially, the primary market will be small EVs, such as the TATA Indica
Vista compact passenger car on which a two-speed-ratio drivetrain will be demonstrated. From the lessons learned with
the two-speed-ratio design, a more advanced n-speed-ratio electric drivetrain will be developed to address a wider EV
market segment.
Other language version of summary:
I'acheteur de voiture typique.
