The proposed research programme has two prime objectives, namely the development of a high-fidelity transit network modelling platform (called Nexus) for effective decision support and the construction of a detailed micro-simulation model of the multi-modal transit network of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Nexus will allow transit agencies and researchers to build realistic transit network models by connecting various available software systems specialized in modelling surface transit operations, train movements and crowd flows, while incorporating the ability to dynamically modify transit service and estimate system response. This approach is intended to facilitate the realistic modelling of large-scale multi-modal transit networks by representing accurately and cohesively the integrated flows of all passengers and vehicles through these complex networks. The development of the GTA transit network model using Nexus will enable planning and operations analysis by the local transit agencies, and will provide a calibrated test network for researchers to use within the University of Toronto transit research group. Nexus is also being targeted as an integrating platform for past and future models of transit user behaviour and transit operations.
