Numerous technological advances are rapidly emerging and transforming how we travel. The key emerging disruptive technologies and services to transportation systems include driving automation, pervasive connectivity, E-hailing and E-sharing, innovative first-mile last-mile transit services, and robotic delivery of goods. As technology is rapidly advancing, there are equally transformative attitudinal changes and emerging needs on the travellers' side. There is an urgent need for a structured research to address the city scale effects. Our research therefore focuses on large and complex transportation systems in cities, and not on vehicular technology creation per se. We focus on how to exploit disruptive transportation technologies and services to maximize the benefits to Canadians while avoiding potential risks and pitfalls.
The iCity Centre for Automated and Transformative Transportation (iCity-CATTS), established in 2017, aims at addressing the large-scale impacts of disruptive transportation technologies and services on our cities. It is created to guide societal transformation in a positive direction, avoid the emergence of counterproductive travel trends, and emboldens Canadian cities as leaders in North America and the world. This project builds the analytical foundation of the iCity-CATTS along three core aspects: (1) quantifying the impacts of transformative technologies on transportation system demands, infrastructure capacities, and system performance, (2) guide the inevitable transformation in socially positive directions, and (3) respect, protect and improve the economic, social and environmental sustainability of our cities. The collective effort includes five main projects that address transformative transportation in the research areas of transportation demand forecasting, traffic control and management, transit systems planning and operations, urban freight systems, and sustainability. The resulting knowledge and tools are unique to Canada and will guide the design, adoption, and governance of transportation systems in the era of transformative technologies.
