Bacterial contamination of food processing equipment is a constant problem at every level of the food processing industry. Keeping surfaces clean and free of microbial contamination is an on-going challenge. This proposal seeks to test the effectiveness of a new, fast-acting antimicrobial compound that has been developed by Exigence Technologies (Winnipeg, Canada) when sprayed onto various material surfaces to kill bacteria. We will test materials that are commonly used in the food processing industry, and determine if the spray is suitable to kill bacteria that are already present, and if it can prevent new bacteria from contaminating the surface. We hope to modify this disinfectant solution to uniformly coat surfaces, and be a fast-acting, food-safe product for industrial use that can help keep food free from bacterial contamination for safe consumption.
