项目摘要
Point-of-care disease management systems that enable complex laboratory testing to be performed at or near
patients' locations have the potential to significantly improve the quality of healthcare by expediting clinical
decision making and providing effective disease screening and diagnostics capabilities to people living in
remote and resource-poor regions. ChroMedX is a Toronto-based biotechnology company that is working
towards developing the first handheld point-of-care diagnostic system that combines co-oximetry for
evaluating the body's oxygenation state with blood gas and electrolyte analysis. This system requires optical
sample holders and electrochemical analyzers to be manufactured on the same platform. Although ChroMedX
has substantial expertise in the design of optical systems and ion-selective membranes for blood electrolyte
selection, they require additional expertise in developing miniaturized and high surface area electrochemical
circuitry directly on their optical sample holder. Towards this goal, the industry and academic groups will
collaborate to develop low-temperature, inexpensive, and scalable fabrication techniques for creating high
surface area electrodes integrated with ion-selective membranes on flexible polymer substrates. Throughout
this project, the developed manufacturing processes will be used to demonstrate blood electrolyte analysis
using a miniaturized high surface area electrode system, which is integratable with ChroMedX's optical sample
holder.
