Regulations defining the limits of certain dissolved/suspended species in water are ever changing and are
constantly becoming stricter. Therefore, for industry to meet regulation and to not only save the environment,
but also save millions of dollars in fines and bad press, new water remediation technologies need to constantly
developed and improved upon. Since 2005, Clearflow Enviro Systems Group Inc. has developed polymer
chemistry that has been shown to be effective at nutrient removal from water, metals removal from water, soil
stabilization, dust control, wastewater treatment and solids management. The goal of this project is to expand
upon Clearflow's extensive expertise and proven product efficacy by using hydrogel nanoparticle (nanogel)
technology developed by the Serpe Group to enhance the activity and selectivity of their water treatment
processes. Specifically, this project will focus on developing nanogels that remove selenium, iron, arsenic,
mercury, calcite, and potassium from process water. This will involve changing the nanogel chemical
functionality to target specific ions. Furthermore, once the nanogel chemistry is optimized, we will explore
various formulations that will interface with Clearflow's polymer processing capabilities. The research project
proposed here will assist in developing a strategy to save industry millions of dollars in process applications.
Clearflow already has industry clients who are looking for these solutions.
