Devon Canada has approached SAIT Polytechnic to launch a research project to analyze an electromagnetic oil sands heating method used in a pilot project in Fort McMurray. Since the heating technology is relatively new, areas such as magnetic fields in the heating zone and heat absorption characteristics of the oil sands have not been fully assessed. The research project will investigate these areas in order to evaluate the heating method and explore potential improvements in terms of energy efficiency. The research will enable SAIT to gain valuable experience in developing new, clean oil heating technologies with simulation testing. In addition, it will help expand Devon's technological capabilities in heavy oil extraction and enhance its competitiveness.
