项目摘要
SAIT Polytechnic is requesting NSERC Applied Research and Development grant funding for a project to
advance the development of a novel pressurized single dose delivery device for S-1226TM, a new drug
developed by SolAeroMed Inc. for the treatment of severe asthma. In the future the drug is also expected to
treat exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis. SolAeroMed Inc., a
small Alberta company, has previously engaged with Applied Research and Innovation Services at SAIT to
create a novel delivery system for the company's clinical trials. SolAeroMed has completed preclinical studies
and a Phase I clinical trial showing that S-1226TM is effective as well as safe at all dosing levels; a Phase IIa
clinical trial to demonstrate proof of concept is currently underway.
There is no dispensing technology on the market today that meets the company's needs. The components of the
new drug must be specifically combined within and propelled from the device, and reach the patient's lungs
within a short period of time, to provide a more effective and longer lasting relief of acute asthma attacks.
Development of the device will greatly assist the company's commercialization.
