Maritime Survivor Locating Device Prototyping and Testing

Canatec Associates International Ltd. plans to collaborate with SAIT Polytechnic to develop an advanced maritime survivor locating device (MSLD), which can be certified for industrial and military applications. Utilizing GPS and Iridium satellite technology, the proposed MSLD system will allow bi-directional communication and other important features. The 24-month project will enable SAIT students to gain hands-on experience in testing systems design of the MSLD system and knowledge of the design-for-manufacture process. Also, SAIT faculty can make use of the project information and findings as new teaching resources. The resulting MSLD technology will substantially enhance human safety in cold, harsh marine environments. It will increase Canatec's revenues and competitiveness, as well as local employment in Canada in the long term.
