In Canada, chainsaws are primarily used by utility arborists in the utility line clearing sector for the removal of brush, diseased trees, and branches that have the potential to interfere with electrical lines. Aerial devices with chainsaws may be required to perform operations above certain heights, including tree canopies. One of the most significant concerns during these operations is the risk of injury and harm to chainsaw operators and those in the surrounding area. Currently there is no safety locking mechanism on the marketplace for a chainsaw scabbard. As a result, during repositioning of the aerial device the chainsaw can be released from the scabbard with the potential to cause serious injury and harm. The primary objective of this research is to design and produce a mechanical locking safety mechanism for a chainsaw scabbard. The safety mechanism will keep the chainsaw from dislodging from the scabbard during repositioning of the aerial device. To achieve this goal background research will first be conducted to determine current technologies on the market, issues and concerns with these products and optimal materials to be used in the development of a prototype. Following this, a prototype will be designed and constructed. Electrical testing and ergonomic evaluation of the prototype will be performed and summarized in a final report. The results from this applied research will allow Hydro One to develop a product addressing a much needed safety concern, and ensure a safe working environment for their employees.
