Solid waste management is a worldwide issue that affects communities of all sizes. Despite their prevalence, waste management services are often unappealing, inefficient, and highly resource-intensive. Waste collection methods are outdated, relying on manual collection methods and rudimentary logistical processes. With the rise of digital solutions and the Internet of Things, the waste management industry is beginning to develop smart technologies and data-driven solutions to improve how we store, collect, and move our garbage.****Molok North America Ltd., based in Mount Forest, Ontario, has unique solid waste disposal service offerings that include low footprint buried waste receptacles. The semi-underground containers boast a number of environmental advantages and result in greater capacity per cubic volume compared to surface containers. The primary objective of this applied research project is to develop a sensory unit that will transform Molok's innovative receptacles into "smart" receptacles. As a smart waste receptacle, the unit will send real-time data related to fill level, temperature, and odour to the waste managers. This information will allow the user to optimize pickup scheduling, thereby saving municipalities and waste service companies money and resources. A sensor-based, on demand communication system would allow Molok to offer the latest in state-of-the-art urban infrastructure, significantly improving their place in the multi-billion dollar waste management market. ******
