Fast and reliable mobile connections for smartphones

The wireless communication system is expected to provide instantaneous connectivity to the Internet from many different smart devices. In addition, each smart device runs multithread applications that generate multiple parallel connections causing bandwidth explosion. In many cases, not all the connections are active all the time, that require prudent service discipline to guarantee the contracted quality of service (QoS) and optimized resource management schemes to operate with minimum air time. The near-zero latency for connectivity/transmission through available heterogeneous networks (WiFi, or cellular, or femtocell network) and multitude of connections per device under QoS and data rate constraints pose challenges to the smart phone application developers. In this project, an integrated client-server communication framework will be designed to minimize the access and transmission delay for mobile phone applications. The successful completion of this project will enable the industry partner to further develop distributed and virtual mobile applications for smartphones based on the developed framework.
