This ENGAGE project aims to develop a wireless sensor based real-time data acquisition and machine state analysis system that will be integrated with milling machines to improve the quality of the work-pieces. The following are expected to be achieved (i) investigation of appropriate wireless sensor replacement for currently used wired accelerometer-based vibration sensing device, (ii) characterization of the received signals from the sensor transmitter at a nearby room where the monitoring device, with receiver module microcontroller and signal processing units, is installed, and (iii) development of multi-sensor data fusion methodology to determine the state of the machine tool. The use of wireless sensing and monitoring system in milling and turning machines is expected to help improve the efficiency and reliability with less wastage of milled products and improved quality in manufacturing industry.
