Mobile internet traffic is projected to increase thousand-fold within a decade generating much higher data volume per area in wireless landscape. In addition, users demand better quality of experience, lower delay, higher energy efficiency and improved coverage. These pose significant challenges on the next generation (5G) wireless communication system design, including network structure, air interface, duplexing schemes, multiple access and resource management. Radio resource management (RRM) in such advanced heterogeneous wireless networks is complex due to resource constraints, service requirements, multiple players (applications, networks, technologies) and autonomous/distributed mode of operations. With the challenges, higher degrees of freedom and many use cases come opportunity to innovate novel RRM paradigm for the emerging wireless communication system. The proposed research work therefore seeks to design and develop advanced and practical RRM techniques for heterogeneous wireless networks with enhanced small cells and, rich and diverse machine-to-machine (M2M) traffic in emerging 5G systems. This will improve the capacity and coverage of the next generation wireless systems and offer robust quality of service provisioning with power and spectral efficiency. In particular, the following will be designed, analyzed and optimized: dynamic spectrum allocation and sharing in licensed shared access mode, joint access control and resource allocation for concurrent and massive access of M2M devices, interference management and scheduling in multicarrier full-duplex systems in enhanced small cells, time-frequency block allocation and optimization in dense small cells, and resource allocation in cooperative cognitive small cells. This research program will help Canada's information and communication technology industry to lead, and in particular benefit wireless service providers and vendors to support better and diverse high quality service and product offerings for customers while increasing system capacity and coverage. Also, the contribution will be evidently useful in some applications in areas such as smart city, sensor networking and intelligent transportation systems in addition to high speed data communication within the integrated heterogeneous wireless networks.
