英文摘要
We are requesting a laser ablation (LA) system that will be coupled to our inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS) in order to determine ultra-rapid chemical analysis on solid samples. LA-ICPMS is a powerful and sensitive microanalytical technique, enabling multi-element analysis and isotope ratio measurements at trace and ultratrace levels, with spatial resolution in the µm range. The technique can be used for bulk analysis, depth profiling and elemental mapping of numerous geological and biological matrices. The LA-ICPMS will strongly support several research programs requiring the analysis of solid samples, including the analysis of atmospheric aerosols, determinations of trophic transfer, determinations of the role of metals in human health (via measurements in hair) and the detection of metallic nanomaterials in soils and biosolids. Each of these fields is well funded by external grants, including from NSERC, however, our present ability to examine solid inorganic samples (soils, sediments, aerosols, etc.) depends upon total digestions using strong acids under sub optimal conditions. Currently, there is no capacity for laser ablation at the University of Montreal and only limited capacity in the Montreal area. The acquisition of this state-of-the art instrument will further consolidate our position as leaders in this exploding research field and provide new funding opportunities and research directions in the environmental and health sciences. HQP will be involved with world class research programs and trained using facilities that are among the best in the world.
