Polysomnography is a multi-parametric test that is used to study sleep and sleep-disordered breathing. Presently, sleep studies are only performed in hospital sleep laboratories. They require an overnight stay and continuous monitoring using a number of sensors. Such studies are labour intensive and costly, and because the sensors are attached to the patient's body, the test methods used are invasive and can significantly interrupt normal sleep patterns, especially in children. The goal of the proposed research is to perform a feasibility study of a novel noninvasive method to assess sleep-disordered breathing. The project has a great potential to reduce healthcare costs associated with sleep studies because, if successful, the methods will allow for the pre-screening of patients in their homes over several nights.
