英文摘要
This proposal is for the industrial stream of the NSERC CREATE program and lays the foundation forcollaboration on Advanced Technology Vehicles between McMaster, the University of Windsor, and leading Canadian and international automotive companies. Concerns related to the impact of fossil fuels on climate change, population health and the environment have resulted in a momentous shift in the global automotive strategy. We have entered an era of change and unprecedented investments on alternative technologies with increasing emphasis on electrification. The proposal is in line with the highest area of investment priority for the automotive sector that is the development of new electric energy storage and electric propulsion technologies. The proposed NSERC CREATE Program in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Powertrain Design and Development will provide the Canadian automotive sector with the highly qualified personnel it needs to be internationally competitive. The automotive sector is strategically important and economically a national priority. It was particularly hard hit by the great recession of 2008-2014, severely impacting vehicle production and automotive jobs. The trend has now reversed and the sector is growing rapidly and in need of HQP, particularly for those with training in advanced electric and hybrid powertrain technologies. Through access to world class facilities and mentorship by a team of accomplished faculty and industrial supervisors, the HQP will become specialists with the capacity to work effectively in industrial and interdisciplinary environments. The proposal focuses as much on the developments and well roundedness of the HQP as well as their technical training. This innovative training program will focus on the development of technical and professional skills to facilitate the transition of HQP from trainees to valuable employees in the Canadian automotive sector.
