The widespread use of smartphones is providing rich grounds to gather traffic data. Smartphones often emitBluetooth and/or WiFi signatures which can be detected by specialized sensors. Current technologies exist todetect these signatures using roadside equipment. An area of improvement is to enhance the positionalaccuracy of the signal source. This is especially useful in traffic data collection when spatial scope of study islimited and traffic congestion is common. Currently, WiFi and Bluetooth sensors are used in singular form todetect road user presence. There is a theoretical potential to use a cluster of sensors to simultaneously gatherdata from the same signal emitter to enhance positional accuracy. This project involves theoretical andexperimental work to develop such technology and investigate its practical feasibility. Various equipmentset-up protocols and data integration algorithms will be investigated in order to improve positional accuracyestimate on road segments. The study will also lay the ground for more varied traffic facilities, aside from roadsegments, in which the positional accuracy estimate is expected to be more challenging.
