英文摘要
Effective measurement and monitoring tools for detecting, quantifying and attributing fires are required at finespatial scales and in close to real time. Globally, detection of fires in near real time is an operational imperativefor companies especially in the tropics charged with ensuring sustainable use of forest resources. Satelliteremote sensing is a critical tool for detecting and monitoring fires as well as assessing changes in forest coverover time. Currently we rely on optical sensors, such as Landsat and MODIS however, there are challengeswith these data especially in regions of high cloud cover, haze, as well as for detecting small fire events in nearreal time. Tanka, a Vancouver-based, high tech company has developed a commercial solution to this needglobally, by utilizing remote sensing imagery acquired by the Planet constellation of small-sats. The lightweight, small size and low cost nature of these small satellites allow many to be launched consecutivelyresulting in rapid image acquisition anywhere on the globe. This project is designed to review, test anddemonstrate new techniques to detect and characterize fire events on high spatial and temporal remote sensingimagery provided by Tanka over test cases in Canada and globally.
