Recent technological advances in the de-vulcanization of waste elastomer scrap allows for the creation of anew category of polymeric materials. De-vulcanization technology produces elastomeric raw materialstechnically and economically suitable for blending with thermoplastics. The resultant blends mimic thephysical and processing properties of co- and ter- block thermoplastic elastomers.NRT Canada Inc. who has developed and patented a de-vulcanization technology for scrap thermosetelastomeric waste will collaborate with Lambton College's Centre for Industrial Material Development (CIMD)through this project is to learn how to incorporate NRT's de-vulcanized material with varying plastics toprovide materials that emulate the physical and technical properties of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs).The Lambton College research team will include a research technician, research scientist and three researchstudents who will work closely with NRT Canada Inc to improve the function of the recycled material. Theresults of the project will provide economic benefit to NRT by increasing market opportunity, manufacturingcapabilities and cost competiveness. The results will also provide economic and environmental impact toCanada and the region by creating jobs, increasing exporting and global competiveness and enhancing cleantechnologies.
