Developing a satellite-linked traffic counter for remote sites

The College of New Caledonia and Northwest Escapes Ltd. (NW Escapes) are collaborating to research and develop a low-power, satellite-connected, smart traffic counter that will provide real-time measurements of visitor usage levels at remote parks and recreation sites in Northwest British Columbia. This technology system will use emerging satellite communications technology to transmit user and vehicle data from remote parks to the company's central office. Real-time usage data from remote parks and recreation sites will allow the company to improve service and safety while reducing staffing and travel costs. As well, the technology developed will be scalable and marketable to park management companies in other jurisdictions of British Columbia and Canada.This applied research and technology development project will involve College students in the Trades, Electronics, Computer Science and Information Technology programs. Students will gain skills related to microcontroller programming, satellite communications systems, electronic circuit power management and data analyses. These skills will help students develop innovation skills that are needed in BC's growing high-tech sectors.
