Original copolymers from a novel class of antimicrobial vinyl monomers.Nowadays, many consumer products require efficient, durable antimicrobial performance without chemical leaching to comply with stricter environmental regulations. It is particularly true for exporters who target European markets. These markets are under the REACH regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). Worldwide, customers can specify that antimicrobial textiles meet Oeko-Tex or Bluesign standards. In North America, CCPSA (Canada Consumer Product Safety Act) and CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act -USA) regulate, among other things, antimicrobial heavy metals such as Silver (Ag) or Copper (Cu) in consumer products. Given the concern about possible heavy metal leaching (metallic ions moving out) from consumer products and toxicity and environmental issues (ex: toxicity to fishes), non-leaching non-toxic antimicrobial alternatives are highly desirable. The purpose of the proposed project is to develop original antimicrobial copolymers that will show these attributes. The success of this development will allow, eventually, the manufacturing and commercialization of new antimicrobial textile products, including protective uniforms/suits, wound dressings, clothings, sportswear, upholstery fabrics, bedding fabrics, etc.
