With the current demographic trend towards an ageing population, the request for healthcare productsappropriate for the special needs of elderly people is soaring. In particular, incontinence pads are used toprotect bed linens and mattresses in the case of urinary incontinence. These multilayer textile sheet productscombine a high absorbency and an impermeable component. However, issues with currently available productsinclude heat build-up and decubitus ulcers, which are of particular concern for bed-ridden people.The objective of this project is thus to develop the next generation of incontinence pads by leveragingmaterials properties in their design and construction. The requirements include full breathability, incontinencefunctionality, temperature and pressure management, as well as retaining these characteristics after extensiveindustrial laundering. This project will take advantage of the latest advances in polymer and textile science andtechnology, with swelling polymer-grafted microporous membranes, wicking fibers, superabsorbent polymerfibers, and phase change polymers for example. A special focus will also be directed at environmentalconsiderations, including launder-ability and recyclability.The project builds on the extensive experience of the company Vintex Inc. in manufacturing coated textilefabrics for the healthcare market as well as the expertise of CTT Group in designing innovative technicaltextiles to develop the new generation of high performance, fully breathable incontinence pads. It willcontribute towards preserving the best possible quality of life for our seniors with minimizing the impact of thecurrent demographic trend on the environment, two major concerns for Canadians.
