Identification and Propagation of Native Reeds for Reedbed Phytoremediation

Common Reed Grass (Phragmites australis) beds are very efficient at treating contaminated effluents fromindustry, agriculture, municipal and domestic sources. This plant species may be a good candidate for use inremediation of oil and gas contaminated soil. However, due to a very close morphology, it is difficult todistinguish the native reed from the invasive form of the plant. In addition, the most efficient methods ofpropagation have not been determined for this species. NAIT Boreal Research Institute is partnering withJigsaw Inc. to identify and optimize the germination and propagation of native reed for the purpose of landremediation. A morphological identification will be supplemented by DNA testing. The propagationoptimization will include growing the plant from both rhizomes and seeds.
