Robotics is in the midst of rapid growth, fueled by the prospect of robots operating in human-centric environments that are unstructured and uncertain. However, when robots operate in uncertain environments, safety and performance become critical issues. Robots must be able to react to unexpected changes in real-time, safely re- planning their motion. Moreover, for robots to be useful, they should interact with human users, receiving complex task descriptions, and asking for help when they encounter a problem. The chairholder will address these challenges by creating control and coordination algorithms that enable robots to safely and efficiently perform tasks in real-world environments.
