英文摘要
New actuators, sensors and technologies will emerge and will be embedded in everyday things, creating the so-called Tactile Internet. The Tactile Internet is a network or network of networks that uses multisensory information including haptics for the purpose of facilitating multimodal interactions with things (real or virtual) in perceived real time. ***Currently, there is an immense knowledge void for the integration, analysis and consumption of the Internet of Things (IoT)- multisensory data with a reaction time in the order of milliseconds. Application domains include some key sectors of the Canadian economy such as smart healthcare, industrial automation, transportation systems, education and serious games.******The proposed program fits the ICT Target Areas (2016 – 2020) with particular reference to: a) Communications Networks and Services addressing transformative research on software-defined networks, e.g., Quality of Experience; b) Internet of Things/Machine-to-Machine Systems, particularly a scalable IoT infrastructure as well as integration, analysis, and consumption of sensor data; and c) Human Interaction with Digital Media covering the design and development of effortless interactions and effective tools for creating and populating physical and virtual objects and spaces.******The applicant has contributed significantly to the area of Interactive Multimedia Computing and Communication, including collaborative haptic multimodal environments. Through the proposed research program, he will take the existing concepts a step further and develop, among other methods, algorithms and protocols to support multisensory data fusion and multimodal interactions, and to further grow edge computing systems.******The proposed research program will place emphasis on the outstanding training of highly qualified personnel (HQP). HQP will be exposed to an interdisciplinary blend of research areas including haptics/virtual reality and augmented reality, communications network, quality of experience modeling, machine/deep learning approaches, and hands-on prototyping, as well as to a research facility that features state-of-the-art haptics technology and sensory environment. In addition, HQP will be exposed to and trained with skills and expertise that are in high demand in today's competitive job market.
