This research proposal is concerned with the development of a totally synthetic chemical platform to access cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is a minor constituent in cannabis (Cannabis sativa) resin and is non-psychoactive and non-addictive. CBD has a growing list of therapeutic applications, for example in pain management such as migraine and neuropathic pain, as well as treatment of epilepsy and seizures. While natural cannabis resin is expected to be descheduled on October 17th 2018, access to synthetic CBD alleviates many of the problems (cost, inconsistent levels, fungal and insect infestations etc) faced in the growing cannabis industry. Reliable synthetic access to CBD will allow for reliable production and preparation of analogs that will permit a thorough investigation into the pain-management indications of this non-opiate based analgesic.
