SAIT is proposing to collaborate with Cenovus Energy Inc. on a research project to improve a metal oxide nanoparticle coating membrane technology for water-oil separation for steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) oil production operations. Cenovus previously initiated and cooperated with Texas A&M University (TAMU) to investigate the membrane technology which utilizes differential surface wettability as a separation mechanism for water and oil. In the proposed project, SAIT will provide research expertise and resources to develop new membrane prototypes based on the TAMU-Cenovus technology. SAIT will also implement experiments aligned with the high temperature and high pressure SAGD conditions to conduct process testing of the membrane prototypes in order to assess the water-oil separation performance of the new membranes. If successful, the proposed technology will be applied to the complex water treatment for SAGD processes. This will help Cenovus improve the energy and water recycling efficiency within its SAGD operations.**
