Solid waste management practices have evolved over the past several decades as new technologies are able to use biomass as a renewable energy source. Municipal wastewater treatment plants, landfills, yard-waste depots and industrial facilities producing high volumes of organic waste have increased challenges with how their solid organic material is treated, transported and disposed of. One of the conventional processes by which energy is recovered from biomass is anaerobic digestion. CCI BioEnergy Inc. (CCI) has been in the organic waste processing business for more than 20 years. Using a strategic partnership approach, the corporate mission is to design, build, own, sell, and operate, in any combination, processing solutions that recover the resources inherent in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IC&I) waste. To enhance their knowledge about vermicasting and its potential application after their AD process, CCI Bioenergy would is partnering with Lambton College's Lambton Water Centre (LWC) to analyze optimal vermicasting conditions using their digestate, assess the quality of the product in terms of nutrient concentration and other components of interest.Lambton College in partnership with CCI BioEnergy Inc. will assess the viability of incorporating a vermicasting step in CCI's solid processing stage post anaerobic digestion of organic matter. If this proves to be feasible, CCI is planning to deploy the solution on a commercial scale at biogas plants across Canada. This will result in the development of two new positions for each unit deployed and will positively benefit the organizations that own the biogas plants, as well as the companies that sell, distribute and use the worm castings, which have a high value to specialty crop producers.
