Performance analysis and characterization of a new wind turbine ice protection system

This project will analyze the performances and characterize the behaviour of a new hot air ice protection system develop by Canadian company Borealis Wind. To be efficient, ice protection systems such as the one proposed by Borealis must rely on two major aspects. The first aspect deals with the features of the wind turbine where the system is to be installed. The geometry of the blades, the rate of rotation, the heating power and the way the air is circulated in the blade affects the performance of the system limiting, each in in their own way, the overall heat transfer capacity and the outside temperature of the blade. The second aspect to be dealt with is the meteorological conditions under which the turbine is operated. In order to be successful, the performance of the ice protection system must match the conditions under which the turbine is operated. The long term objective of this collaboration is to improve the modeling of Borealis Wind ice protection system and to assess the conditions under which such retrofit system would be efficient.
