The goal of the CRC Chair in Sustainability Science is to enhance our ability to manage Canadas working landscapes for sustainability through the development of theory and empirical knowledge about the interactions among ecosystem services (the benefits that people receive from nature) over time and through space, incorporating the nonlinearities, feedbacks, and legacies known to exist in complex, dynamic systems. I will explore how ES can be better understood as the products of dynamic systems, how models with more predictive capacity can be designed to reflect this, and what dynamic ES models can tell us about planning for sustainability.
