In the last decades, biomaterials, artificial organs and medical implants have been successful to improve quality of the life for millions. However, very rare are the applications for which biomaterials and medical devices are completely successful. Failures or clinical complications are often observed, with different incidences related to the applications. The CRC in Biomaterials and Bioengineering for Surgery short and medium term aim is to improve the clinical performances of medical devices that today are commercially available and implanted daily by clinicians. The overall long-term aim is to investigate specific methodologies for developing physiologically relevant models for assessing and predicting the clinical success of medical devices and drugs, as well as advancing regenerative medicine.
