Only for wind farms in Canada, financial losses due to cold climate are estimated at 113 million dollars per year. Moreover, icing reduces the lifetime of the wind turbine by increasing the mechanical loads and creating rotor imbalance. To address these challenges, wind farm operators want to be informed about icing severity on the wind turbine rotor and if there is any degradation of the blade structure. In that context, Phoenix Contact Ltd., an experienced leader in the manufacturing of industrial automation solutions, wants to improve its ice detection and structural monitoring products for wind turbines and validate their performance for the Canadian market. In this project, Nergica will support Phoenix Contact with the installation of their load monitoring system on one of Nergica's wind turbine, the collection and analysis of data, and the improvement of their ice detection system. Ultimately, this will allow Phoenix Contact to develop a unified and non-intrusive ice detection and load monitoring system for wind turbines tailored to the Canadian wind farm operators' need.
