Food and baggage inspection are important applications of x-ray detector technology to daily life. While automated food inspection can result in high-quality contaminant-free food, baggage inspection is a crucial aspect of safe air-travel. Physics researchers at the University of Victoria and Ryerson University will combine forces with Redlen Technologies who are developing novel x-ray detector technologies in order to manufacture automated x-ray imaging systems for food and baggage inspection. During the course of research, we will use prototype Redlen detectors and mimic food and baggage inspection by scanning known materials including food and baggage contaminants. We will develop models for optimal scanning parameter selection to achieve the highest accuracy of contaminant segmentation. Upon a successful completion of the proposed project, novel food and baggage scanners will be developed and food quality and air travel security will be improved.
