This project will try to design ultrahigh steels for impact applications. We will start with a patented steel alloy and research from that point. We will cast this alloy, and perform a series of heating and mechanical steps to create an alloy of known specification. In order to understand its properties, we will look at the microstructure using advance microscopes that tell us information about the structure and chemistry of the alloy.
Finally, we will compare these treatments and microstructure to the mechanical properties of the alloy in both static and dynamic tests.
Using these materials processing-properties-structure comparisons, we will determine whether this steel composition and preparation is useful for defense applications, allowing adoption and scale-up by our industrial partner, Patriot Forge.
