Development of a new mechanical system to harvest seaweed

Acadian Seaplants Ltd (ASL) is a Nova Scotia-based biotech, export company and the largest independentmanufacturer of marine plant products of its type in the world. ASL has an annual growth target of 20% for the next 3 years and needs to improve its harvesting activities to reach this objective. This research program aims to initiate the development of a mechanical harvester capable of supporting its production growth. The mainobjective of this project is to design and test the most critical subsystem of a seaweed harvester, the one thatcuts seaweed and gathers it on board. With these first results, it will be possible to evaluate harvester'sproductivity and the specifications required for the other subsystems.At the end of this project, it will be possible to evaluate the potential performance of a complete prototype, its design and fabrication costs.
