In Prof. MacLachlan¿s research program in supramolecular materials, he strives to control the interactions between molecules and ions to build complex structures with function. Inspired by the complexity of biological structures (e.g., cells, tissues), he will use natural nanomaterials isolated from plants and animals to construct new materials with spiraling porous structures. As a virtue of the unique structures of these materials ¿ their porosity, conductivity, and helicity ¿ they will have exciting properties. For example, they will have iridescence that resembles a beetle shell. The new materials to be developed may be useful in reflective coatings, supercapacitors, batteries, and sensors.
