In fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that run on hydrogen, hydrogen and oxygen are combined to produceenergy, with the only byproduct being water. This clean, quiet technology has the potential to replacecombustion engines in cars. However, one of the biggest impediments to broad adoption of fuel cell electricvehicles that run on hydrogen is the difficulty of storing hydrogen onboard. High pressure gas cylinders to storeH2 gas or cryogenic tanks to store H2 liquid are heavy and reduce vehicle efficiency. One of the bestapproaches for storing hydrogen in automobiles is to use lightweight, highly porous materials that adsorbhydrogen molecules onto their surfaces.In this proposal, we will work with our partner company to develop new porous materials with highhydrogen storage capacity. Once made, the materials will be characterized and evaluated with the goal ofmaking a material that can store ~5-6 wt.% of H2 at room temperature. If successful, this project could help tofacilitate the spread of FCEVs, which would deliver great economic benefits, significant GHG reduction, andimproved air quality for Canadians, which has lasting health benefits.
